To Everything There is a Season (Jane Doe Six Sentence Stories)

Becca tries to ignore the living room as she passes through to the kitchen. The walls and carpets, devoid of furnishings and covered with the detritus left when furniture is removed, gape accusingly at her. You need to get with it, they say, Richard may be gone but you still need to put your life back together again, and vacuuming and a shower wouldn’t hurt either.

She grabs the half-pint of Moose Tracks left in the freezer and retreats back to her mattress, still on the floor, still just a messy nest without box spring or bed frame. She’ll get to furniture, she really will. Just the first couple episodes of Season 6 first.

  1. Nothing like binge watching Netflix and eating ice cream (I would have a half-gallon, not a half-pint) to cure the emotional pain life sometimes gives us. The description of the empty room reminds me of my daughter’s – she just moved out and the debris is heartbreaking as well as anger-inducing. I’m sure I’ll eat a bit of ice cream before I can move on.

  2. I know someone who lives just like this when life becomes too overwhelming… retreat to bed and a TV marathon. Eventually she always comes back out of the cave and returns to life, and I’m hoping that Jane Doe will too!
